A Celebration of Herbs: Recipes from the Huntington Herb Garden
Published in Hardcover by H E Huntington Library & Art (December, 2002)
Average review score:

Elegant, unique, and enthusiastically recommendedFeaturing more than 200 recipes, A Celebration Of Herbs: Recipes From The Huntington Herb Garden is the culinary collaboration of Huntington Library volunteers, staff, and scholars under the skillful editorship of herb expert Shirley Kerins and Peggy Park Bernal. Featuring a full range of dishes from appetizers, salads, side dishes, soups and breads, to entrees, preserves, desserts, and beverages, A Celebration Of Herbs is enhanced with excerpts and illustrations drawn from the Huntington Library's collection of rare herbals and botanical books from the 15th to the 18th century. A Celebration Of Herbs is an elegant, unique, and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, and community library Cookbook Collections.
OUR SAGE ADVICE: BUY. EAT UP. COOK. EAT UP AGAIN.So much more than a cook's tool, this treasury is a welcome delight --- a well conceived, beautifully illustrated resoruce that's part cookbook, part history book. We thought we knew all there was to know about herbs: rosemary, dill, sage and sometimes tarragon. What we learned will serve us well, especially in those things we serve up in the kitchen. Released by the folks at the Huntington Library and Art Gallery in California, the book includes information on growing herbs, mail sources on where to buy fresh and dried herbs, and, of course, recipes --- brpken down by type, such as appetizers, main courses, jams and jellies, breads, beverages --- that will send you zooming to the nearest [store]. The stunning color illustrations are from Elizabeth Blackwell's 1737 book, "A Curious Herbal," a gem that's housed in the Huntington's rare book department. A celebration, indeed!
Gorgeous herb cookbookThe last thing I needed was another cookbook (I have a whole bookshelf full!), but this one was just too beautiful to resist. And in its own way, this book is different from any other herb cookbook I've seen before. Just as you'd expect, there are extensive notes about how to grow herbs and use them in cooking. But rather than showing photos of herbs, this beautiful coffee-table-type book has reprints of colorful botanical illustrations from the 18th century. The recipes are of course very tempting, from yummy herbed cream cheese dips to more elaborate dishes like salmon in basil cream or rack of lamb rubbed with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. I was skeptical about the apple rosemary tarte tatin recipe, but it turned out to be wonderful. Highly recommended as a cookbook, especially if you enjoy reading about herbs.

Central Park: A Photographic Excursion
Published in Paperback by Fordham University Press (November, 2001)
Average review score:

It's Fabulous!Makes a perfect Holiday gift! Shows the vibrancy and timeless appeal of New York.
Freund reveals his long time love affair with Central Parkby showing us his "park for all seasons". With his spectacular pictures of the monuments and statuary, the animals, the foliage, the rock formations, the whimisical pictures like the Bride and Groom on rollar skates, the shots of the same setting in different lights, the fountains (and my particular favorite, a sudden snow storm interrupting spring), Mr Freund takes us on a magical trip through the park. There are photos of spots you never knew existed but will long to explore. As a bonus, there are great tips for all of us amateur photographers. And "Lucy" has my vote for cutest dog of the year! Especially in these difficult times, the book is a wonderful reminder to everyone of the beauty and wonder that exists right in the middle of New York City. I couldn't stop smiling as I looked through it. Thank you, Mr. Freund for sharing "your" park with us.
What a delight!!!This photographic excursion through Central Park is a real delight. It is just what we all need to remind us of the splendor and joy of New York. The photographs are breathtaking and the text is beautifully wirtten , with just a touch of humor and humility. After enjoying the book myself, I've ordered a number for holiday gifts. I've already heard form some of the folks I sent it to and they share my enthusiam. The real advice: if you don't get this for the holidays, buy it for yourself to get you through the January doldrums.

Chasing Bears
Published in Paperback by Consortium Book Sales & Dist (15 June, 1999)
Average review score:

chashing bears reviewI think that chashing bears is a very good book and that the forester family got closer, that danny grew stronger and stronger and that him and his dad hank got closer and that mike gain some respect for danny and knew if danny wanted to be a computer freak he can be and if he was weak he was weak...
Chasing BearsI purchased this book to read to my 9 yr son while vactioning in Voyageurs National Park. On a rainy day I began reading it to my son out loud. Soon my husband and 12 year daughter came to listen. It became our evening ritual, reading several chapters out loud to the whole family. It is very well written and suspenseful. We hope he writes another book.
Adventure in the North woodsI found this book to be educational as well as entertaining. It discusses details of canoeing and camping but is also a good story about fathers and sons getting to know each other and changing because of their adventures.

Compass American Guides : Underwater Wonders of the National Parks : A Diving and Snorkeling Guide
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (January, 1998)
Average review score:

Amazing descriptions and photographs of fascinating sites! The texture and format of this book is outstanding. It is reader friendly with absolutely beautiful photography. The photos and illustrations in combination with descriptive text gives the reader a first hand experience. I would love to have the opportunity to visit the various archaeological sites and shipwrecks detailed in this book but know that is unrealisitc for me. This book is the next best thing! I always knew our national parks were truly treasures to be admired yet preserved and protected but this book proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt. I highly recommend it!
Spectacular photographs, unlike anything I've ever seen! This book is well laid out, easy to reference and has absolutely fantastic photography. This would be a beautiful coffee table book if it were only bigger. The travel information is excellent, as is the general layout of the book. It is functional, as well as, beautiful. If I weren't involved in diving already, I would be after seeing this book. Outstanding!
Even if you don't dive, buy this book. This volume is helpful in two completely different ways. First way: if you dive. The text is thorough, descriptive and truly useful. Second way: if you don't dive. The beautiful photographs and the witty text open a doorway into--as the title says--underwater wonders you didn't know existed. I doubt you'll find a more informative, engaging travel book in 1998.

The Cook Forest: An Island in Time
Published in Hardcover by Falcon Publishing Company (May, 1997)
Average review score:

NostalgiaThoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous photography of my childhood haunts- I went to grammar school in the Cook Forest area and not long ago when a friend was planning to visit for the first time I handed her this book (I work in a library) as a preview-she was hooked. Mr. Cook has captured all the untouched magic of Pennsylvania forests and packaged it up so we can all carry about a bit of solitude in our busy lives.
This book made me plan a trip there! This beautiful book of photographs is begun with a fascinating description of the forest's history. I didn't realize that Pennsylvania had such a dramatic history involving the early timber industry and later with conservationists. This book quickly makes you realize how lucky we are to have old-growth forests in America.
Surprisingly GoodYou'd never guess from reading this bookthat Anthony Cook was not a professional author or photographer. As a long time visitor to the cook forest, I can testify that the author has beautifully captured the spirit and history of these magnificent woods.

Day and Overnight Hikes in West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest
Published in Paperback by Menasha Ridge Press (01 May, 2000)
Average review score:

Bought for a week vacationRecently, I visited Monongahela on vacation with my wife. What a truly fabulous place, rich in flora and fauna. And we used this book to guide us through. Each trail description (choose from 30 day hikes and 10 overnight) offers commentary on scenery, trail condition, difficulty, accessibility for children and solitude.
Best of the trail in the "Mon".West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest is the mid-Atlantic's best kept secret. Sure, there are a few popular destinations, like the Dolly Sods, but there are so many other places to go in the "Mon". But with over a million acres of land, it's hard to figure out exactly where to go. That's where Mr. Molloy's new book comes in. It has there and back day hikes and overnight loops. It rates each hike and then gives a running narrative of the trail you are on. What is really nice, in my opinion are the concise directions to each trailhead, saving time and getting me to where I really want to be, and that is on the trail.
Great hike...great book!I just got back from a hiking/camping experience I'll never forget. I'd never been to the Monongahela, or "Mon," as it is known, but when I saw this new hiking book I thought I would give it a try. The first hike, to Rohrbaugh Overlook, in the Dolly Sods, stunned me. Have you ever just known you were in the right place at the right time? That's how I felt, while looking over the Red Creek Valley surrounded by rock outcrops jutting from green forests. After a little national forest camping, I headed down to the Cranberry Wilderness, enjoying Molloy's Middle Fork overnight backpacking loop. The Middle Fork Cranberry River flowed clear beneath stately yellow birch trees and when I got up to the highcountry, the scent of spruce trees provided an aromatic backdrop for a night beneath the stars. Unfortunately the work bell rang and I had to return to Pittsburgh, but with 31 other day hikes and nine overnight backpacking loops in this book I shall return to the "Mon" many more times. This is a very useful and interesting book... perfect for anyone considering hiking in this area!

A Day at the Park: In Celebration of Wrigley Field

BUY IT YOU WILL LOVE ITA GREAT GIFT FOR ANY BASEBALL FAN. A GREAT TOUR OF ONE OF THE BEST STADIUMS EVER. I LOVE THIS BOOK. EXCELLENT READING. WRIGLEY BROUGHT TO LIFE IN A BOOK. GREAT BUY.
a book to displayi am a sox's fan but this book makes me love the chicago cubs magnificent building. It brings you behind the sceens and shows little secrets about the park. Great book.
Fitting tribute to the best ballpark in the worldWilliam Hartel's affectionate tribute to the "Friendly Confines" of Wrigley Field is a must for any baseball fan, and especially if you've ever been fortunate to watch a game there. Though there are numerous historical photos outlining the history of the old park built in 1914, the bulk of the pictures were taken from dawn to dusk on the same day - June 18, 1993. Loaded with quotes and stories from everyone from Bill Veeck to Ernie Banks and long-time National League Umpire Doug Harvey, this book makes its case that Wrigley is not only the best place on earth to play and watch baseball, but one of the most memorable places to visit for fans of all ages. I read this book on a cold January evening yet when I closed my eyes, I could feel the sun on my face, smell the hot dogs, and hear Ernie Banks saying, "Let's play two!"

Deadly Waters - National Park'S Mysteries Series
Published in Hardcover by National Geographic (01 October, 1999)
Average review score:

Action-packed excitement with many strong characters.I am a lower elementary teacher (first through third grades) and each week we have storytime twice a week. Last year, I read this book to my students representing the "mystery" genre. Not only is this a wonderful read-aloud book for any age group, but it is a perfect mystery as every single chapter ends with everyone wanting to know what happens next. I had every student on the "edge of their seats" so to speak, which is a very challenging thing to do when you have such a diverse group.
This year, when I started storytime, my students asked if I was going to read Deadly Waters again. I told them I'd get another in the series and read that to them. I just hope the others are even half as good. Just as a side-line: the characters are truly one of the best things about this book. Strong female and male characters that the students could really root for and understand.
Deadly WatersThis is a great book.I really got into the book just by reading the first few chapters. My favorite character in the book is Briger, because he is the oldest and the strongest and the bravest. This is a good book for ages 11 and up to adult.I gave it 5 stars, becuase it is one of the best books I have read in my life. The family in the story is big, there names are Steven which is the dad,Olivia which is the mom,and then there is Ashly,Jack and Briger who are the sons and the daughter. It takes place in the Everglades.I liked it because it was a mystery because the manatees where dying and I wanted to find out why the were dying.
Deadly Waters is certainly not deadly dull. This fourth book in the National Parks Mystery series is set in the Florida Everglades where Jack and Ashley's mother is investigating mysterious deaths in the manatee population. The story moves at a fast pace, balancing action with accurate information about the wildlife found in the Everglades. This book follows much the same formula set in the first three books in the series: Jack, Ashley and Bridger (the latest foster child the Landon family has taken in). explore the National Park and do some unofficial investigating while their parents aid the official investigation into the manatees' deaths. These books are well written and very well researched. Both mystery buffs and animal lovers should find plenty to keep their interest. The photographs in the middle of the book are a great bonus. Fans of Jean Craighead George's ecological mysteries are sure to enjoy this series as well.

Disney World & Orlando Theme Parks: Your Passport to Great Travel! (2nd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Open Road Pub (January, 1999)
Average review score:

Fenster's work is the ultimate guide to the Orlando area!Since the choices in the field of Disney-related guides are vast, I was amazed that one should rise so far to the top of the class. The work is informative and wittily written. Fenster's humor will keep you rolling and his completeness smokes the competition. This ought to be the bible for any family or individual planning a Central Florida vacation. A really fabulous resource which directed my family's vacation and will do so again.
Very InformativeI had a great vacation with this book
A marvellous book on Disney WorldThis is a marvellous compendium of useful facts about the world's largest theme park. I found it highly illuminating - it has profoundly altered the way I percieve Walt Disney World and its manifold attractions. Since I first tried it a few years ago, I've been using this book to guide my various trips to Disney World ever since.

Don't Make Me Smile
Published in Hardcover by Alfred A. Knopf (July, 1981)
Average review score:

Surprisingly funny. This book is actually one of the funniest I've ever read: "This must be it! I thought to myself as I ran to the door. Quickly, I pulled it open. There stood Hank. Hank is one of my mother's cousins. She has three of them. The other one is Hank." This book is funny enough for adults to be amused and never gets preachy or condescending. It's a good book to teach kids about divorce, also. Highly reccomended for any age!
This book deserves six stars! This book deserves six stars! It was very funny. My favorite part was after the school program when Charles's mother came over to him and whispered to him that his zipper was down and when he saw the underwear all bunched up in his zipper! I like Barbara Park's books. She is today's funniest writers for children. I hope she keeps on writing.
Wonderful. When Charlie learns that his parents are getting a divorce, he won't take it lying down!! Never!! He'll do anything to get them back together. ANYTHING, including run away. This is a hilarious and heart-warming book about a boy's way of coping with divorce.
